Alvaro Tori, MD, FAAP, is Assistant Dean of Diversity Affairs for Faculty Affairs |Professional Development |Diversity. He practices medicine in the pediatric critical care unit at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and IUSM. He’s enthusiastic about his position with the Diversity Affairs Office because it affords him the opportunity to increase representational diversity, inclusive environment, and cultural competency through his efforts with strategic programming at IUSM. He enjoys having conversations with students, staff and faculty on how to create a more welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for everyone. His personal experience, as both a native of Latin America and a member of the LGBTQ community, enable him to truly understand the meaning of diversity and the importance of its acceptance. He is working to eliminate the unconscious biases that contribute to healthcare disparities embedded in the current system of medical care by utilizing his skills in clinical knowledge and compassionate service. He feels fortunate his circumstances brought him from Peru to complete his training at IUSM. His decision to stay in Indiana to practice medicine, teach, and start a family has generated inspiring positivity and growth in both his personal and professional endeavors.
