Standards of Excellence in Service
This document outlines in detail the guidelines for the evaluation of faculty, the development of an area of excellence as a prerequisite for promotion, and the various ways in which faculty can make contributions to the Service mission.
Scholarship has always been a major method of documenting excellence in Research. However, the importance of a body of Scholarship for faculty seeking promotion in Service has recently received significant attention. IUSM has updated the criteria for excellence in all 3 mission areas. As defined by Ernest Boyer, scholarship includes the categories of discovery, integration, application, and teaching. With the development of new forms of media to disseminate scholarly material, there has been growing national recognition that the entire spectrum of scholarship needs to be broadened while not losing the time-honored process of peer review. Thus scholarship must still be publicly retrievable and peer reviewed, but may be of a less traditional nature.
