Examples include resources for dependent caregiving demands and a searchable tool for IUSM and IUHP employment policies.

Following Dr. Chang’s session on “striving and thriving,” Juliet King will convey the benefits of using creative expression to address burnout and foster resilience, with a focus on the underlying neuroscience. Professor King will lead an interactive experiential art making session that will seek to support audience members in exploring risks for burnout and the vicarious traumatization that often accompanies healthcare provision.

Scientists and physicians today are required to connect to and tailor their communication for a variety of audiences, in terms non-scientists can understand. This workshop borrows techniques from improvisational theater and communication studies to help participants speak more spontaneously, responsively, and directly. Participants will practice finding common ground with an audience, speaking at different levels of complexity for different audiences, and answering questions about their work.

The IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning seeks proposals from faculty teaching at universities across Indiana for the 2016 E.C. Moore Symposium on Excellence in Teaching. The Plater Institute program will involve participants in the emerging field of applied improvisation in teaching and learning with keynote, Katie Watson, JD, an award-winning Assistant Professor in the Medical Humanities and Bioethics Program of the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, who is also an adjunct faculty member at the Second City Training Center. Come learn how improv can be used for more than comedy and discover new ways to invigorate your teaching.
