OFAPD is pleased to introduce this inaugural program for faculty in the culminating years of their careers. While much attention has been paid to the professional development needs of junior and mid-career faculty, less emphasis has been placed on the unique needs of senior faculty. Long-range retirement planning is helpful, yet preparation often focuses exclusively on financial matters when there is so much more to consider.

Building Toward and Beyond Retirement aims to help senior faculty lay a foundation upon which to build and enjoy a growing sense of accomplishment, satisfaction and personal fulfillment. The program will feature a discussion of psychosocial issues associated with this career stage, succession planning, IU retirement planning resources, and opportunities for service within the community and the University. A panel of IUSM emeritus faculty will also share how they made the transition and remain actively engaged in our academic community.

Women have achieved significant accomplishments in medicine and science, yet comprise a relatively small proportion of faculty, especially at the highest ranks and positions of leadership. As a result, women faculty tend to have smaller professional networks than male colleagues and have fewer role models of success.

The Stepping Stones of Women in Leadership series is intended to create a forum where all faculty and students can learn about professional development through hearing the personal career journeys of successful women. Please join us in honoring the career of Dr. Sandra Petronio.

The Edward C. Moore Symposium brings the Indiana higher education community together to examine the various instructional strategies that encourage student learning. How might the new digital context help us make higher education meaningful for an expanded population of college students? This keynote presentation by Randy Bass, Ph.D. will explore concrete approaches to this challenge through the lens of educating the whole person, where the role of digitally-enhanced learning is much broader than teaching targeted knowledge and skills.
