April 2015

The IUPUI Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research invites you to IUPUI Research Day 2015 on Friday, April 17. This open house celebrates the cutting-edge and multifaceted research and scholarly activities of IUPUI. The School of Medicine will be represented in over half of the posters and exhibits.

Research Day provides an opportunity for the IUPUI faculty, staff, and students, their academic, industrial, and governmental partners, and the broader community, to come together and learn more about the research enterprise at IUPUI, to explore new collaborations, and to lay the foundation for new partnerships.

Women have achieved significant accomplishments in medicine and science, yet comprise a relatively small proportion of faculty, especially at the highest ranks and positions of leadership. As a result, women faculty tend to have smaller professional networks than male colleagues and have fewer role models of success.

The Stepping Stones of Women in Leadership series is intended to create a forum where all faculty and students can learn about professional development through hearing the personal career journeys of successful women. Please join us in honoring the career of Dr. Debbie Thurmond.

As competition for external funding becomes more challenging, getting one's scholarly work successfully published is more important than ever. Dr. Gopen's approach is based on a single idea: learning to write for the reader allows the writer to control what readers learn. This year, Dr. George Gopen will present this workshop on Tuesday, July 28. If you are planning to attend the advanced workshop on Wednesday, July 29 you MUST attend the introduction workshop or have attended one in the years prior.

As in past years, Dr. Gopen will also conduct hour-long, individualized consultations. ONLY faculty members who participate in the day-long event will have access to the individual consultation registration. Instructions will be sent to participants after their registration for the workshop is complete.

Strong oral presentation skills are key to success for doctors, scientists, and other professionals, yet many speakers find difficulty with this task. While systematic in other areas of work, presenters may approach speaking intuitively, and sometimes haphazardly, with good intentions, but less than ideal results. With a PhD in applied physics from Stanford University and engineering background from the Louvain School of Engineering, Jean-luc Doumont devotes his time and energy to training doctors, scientists, business people, and others in effective communication, pedagogy, statistical thinking, and related themes.
