The Next Generation @ IUPUI is an intensive one-year leadership development program specifically designed for faculty members from under-represented groups. The program is designed to provide an avenue to expand the pool of faculty who are ready to assume leadership positions at Indiana University. In addition to a curriculum addressing higher education administration theories and trends, participants will receive individualized coaching and mentoring and will develop a broader network of peers across the campus.
There is no doubt that preparing and placing more faculty from under-represented groups in positions of leadership will provide important new perspectives on decision making and help speed the curricular, organizational and policy changes needed to ensure a more effective, representative and responsive system of higher education. The establishment of The Next Generation @ IUPUI will strengthen the leadership pipeline of under-represented minority leaders, prepare participants for senior level administrative positions in higher education, promote on-campus professional development and mentoring, and facilitate succession planning.
Participants in The Next Generation @ IUPUI will acquire strategies for professional development with special emphasis on leadership, self-awareness and presentation, institutional change, and career planning. Ultimately, the program will prepare participants to develop core skills to secure leadership roles on campus and effectively address emerging and challenging issues facing higher education, such as the globalization of higher education and the growing diversity of the student body and work force.
The curriculum includes topics such as: models and concepts of leadership; organizational systems and development; emerging issues in higher education; network building and communities of practice and conflict management. The Next Generation @ IUPUI is funded through the Indiana University President’s Diversity Initiative and is sponsored by the Indiana University School of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development, the Academic Affairs at IUPUI and the Center for Urban at Multicultural Education within the IUPUI School of Education.
