The Mission of the Division of Diversity Affairs and the Diversity Council through an emphasis on inclusion, diversity and respect, seeks to enhance the cultural competence of the medical school community and foster the accomplishment of its tripartite mission through programming in the areas of recruitment, retention and community service.
In keeping with IUSM's pursuit of excellence in the fulfillment of our mission, the Division and Council seeks to encourage, enable, and empower all members of the IUSM community to positively contribute to and benefit from a diverse learning environment.
To establish an organizational culture in which differences such as race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, and other physical abilities and qualities are not merely present, but where cultural identity is highly valued and barriers to full organizational participation in the environment are removed. Succinctly put, our vision is: the IUSM family, where diversity is an everyday reality!

The Office of the Dean, the Executive Associate Deans and the Associate Dean for Diversity Affairs provide leadership, direction and strategic input.
The Diversity Council is composed of a broad representation of selected volunteers committed to a comprehensive concept of diversity. These individuals, approximately 20 members, are able to bring experience, expertise and insights to bear on campus-wide diversity initiatives. Members serve on a year-to-year basis depending upon their level of interest, attendance and participation.
The Diversity Council Subcommittees assist with the implementation of various aspects of the Division of Diversity Affairs' Strategic Plan. The five subcommittees are: Mediation, Student Retention, Student and Resident Recruitment, Faculty Recruitment and Development, and Diversity Outreach.
