Mentoring programs have offered an opportunity to address diversity and increase participation of underrepresented faculty in the academy. Mentoring literature points to positive effects in career development. However, insubstantial mentoring programs and unsuccessful faculty development programs can contribute negatively to underrepresented faculty career progression. Studies and practices in mentoring continue to evolve because approaches to mentoring programs are broad and their intensity varies. This talk will discuss mentoring experiences of Black and Latino faculty in academic medicine, as well as, a proposed focus on culturally relevant mentoring.
About the presenter:
Sylk Sotto, EdD, MBA, MS serves as the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and Diversity, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. She also serves as Co-Chair of IUSM’s Diversity Council. She brings over 17 years of experience spanning from basic science, social and educational research, research compliance and ethics, to academic and clinical affairs finance, operations and administration. Her dissertation research focused on the socialization, mentoring, and faculty development experiences, and diversity and inclusion perspectives of Black and Latino faculty in academic medicine. As a practitioner scholar, her research emphasis is in four areas: race/ethnicity and gender equity in academic medicine, faculty and professional development, inclusive pedagogy and practices in medicine, and leadership & administration. Nationally, she is a Council member in the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine serving also in their Diversity and Inclusion Committee. She is also a member of AAMC’s GDI and GFA, and the Association for the Study of Higher Education, among others. Current research and grant work includes the study of faculty developers’ approaches towards URM and women tailored faculty development programs; and learning environments of diverse medical students, residents and fellows. During the summer of 2018, she will host STEM undergraduate students from historically black institutions throughout the Department of Medicine, funded by a recent collaborative grant. She completed a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Colorado State University, a Master’s in Business Administration, a Master’s in Healthcare Leadership with a concentration in Health Policy, Law and Ethics and a Doctorate degree in Higher Education from the University of Denver. Prior to coming to Indiana University in 2015, she served at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Department of Medicine.
