Have you considered using group work to make your large classes more engaging and interactive, but wondered how you would manage the logistics and structure the activities? Although lecturing seems an effective mode to deliver content to a large group of learners, it can lead to issues with classroom management and student motivation and engagement. Collaborative learning is a popular active learning technique shown to improve student learning and motivation. But, designing, implementing, and assessing the outcomes of collaborative learning in the context of a large class can feel exceptionally challenging. In this faculty teaching showcase, we will engage in a conversation with Jennifer Nelson from the Department of Earth Sciences to learn more about how she has successfully used collaborative learning models in large intro-level classes. She will discuss her process of creating an active, group work-based large class session with examples of well-structured and incentivized class-preparation techniques and in-class activities that motivate students and trigger their higher-order thinking.
This webinar is part of the Center for Teaching and Learning’s new Faculty Teaching Showcase Webinar Series, a venue for faculty to share their teaching practices with one another.
