Again this academic year, the IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning is sponsoring an organizational meeting for individuals interested in becoming involved in a faculty writing circle.

At this meeting we will discuss further the concept of faculty writing circles and assist you in organizing your circle, setting meetings dates and times, expectations, etc.

What is a Faculty Writing Circle?

Faculty Writing Circles (FWCs) are small groups of faculty who meet regularly to provide support and feedback about one's scholarly writing. Most groups involve 3-5 participants and provide a consistently scheduled support structure (e.g., weekly, semimonthly, monthly). In FWCs, individuals receive feedback from peers in their discipline (or related disciplines) to enhance their efforts of writing for publication.

This year, in addition to the face-to-face format, interested faculty will also have the choice to join a writing circle that meets online.

What are the benefits of Faculty Writing Circles?

In addition to receiving feedback on one's writing, research shows that those who write regularly are more productive with respect to scholarly writing (Gray & Birch, 2001; Steinert, McLeod, Liben & Snell, 2008). Writing circles can provide an incentive to be writing on a regular schedule. Because many FWCs involve groups that are interdisciplinary, they can be a valuable way to connect with others on campus. FWCs can also help members hone their skills in communicating about their scholarship to a wide audience.

Monica’s background in Sociology and program evaluation uses a participatory approach. In addition to her MBA, Monica has a Master’s of Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins University.

IUPUI Applying for NIH Funding: The Myths, The Mistakes, and The Magic

For this interactive presentation, Dr. Michael Stefanek will provide tips and recommendations for those engaged in the process of writing and submitting grants to the National Institutes of Health. This will include a look at the review process, including a "review panel" made up of several IU faculty who have NIH study section experience. Finally, the discussion will include some basic information about NIH funding mechanisms and resources available within the University for faculty writing grants.

Dr. Stefanek spent 8 years as a Branch Chief with the NIH in an extramural division. In this role, he developed new initiatives and provided oversight to the grant management process. He also worked closely with principal investigators (PI) and the Center for Scientific Review, the group who coordinates the grant review process at the NIH. In addition, Dr. Stefanek was PI and co-investigator on a number of funded NIH grants prior to joining the NIH.

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is changing in significant ways to address five recommendations. The changes have already begun and include:

  • The introduction of new formats (focused on pharmaceutical advertisements and scientific abstracts) to assess examinees’ ability to apply their knowledge of biostatistics and other critical thinking skills;
  • Making the standardized patient/examinee encounters in the Clinical Skills Examination more authentic; and
  • The use of experimental or clinical vignettes in all questions in all of the Step computer-based examinations.

Step 3 will be splitting into two examinations as early as 2014. The examinations will be competency based, and there will be a greater emphasis on competencies underrepresented in past USMLE assessments.

At this event, Dr. Steven Haist, Vice President for NBME Test Development Services, will discuss these changes in greater detail.  Participants will be able to:

  • List the five major recommended changes for the USMLE.
  • Discuss the new competencies to be assessed. Describe competencies to be assessed by new item formats.
  • Describe the practice analysis findings informing changes to the USMLE program.
  • Assess the proposed changes designed to assess foundational science throughout USMLE

The Third Annual Harvey Milk Dinner to celebrate gender and sexual equality at IUPUI will be held on Tuesday, October 9, 2012.  The dinner will begin at 7 p.m. with registration and a short alumni and community reception sponsored by the IU GLBT Alumni Association beginning at 6:15 p.m. in the IUPUI Campus Center fourth floor (420 University Blvd, Indianapolis).

Tickets are $40 for adults, faculty/staff, and community members and $20 for IUPUI students; includes admission to the pre-event reception and the dinner.  Tables of 10 are available for campus and community organizations.  Register online at the link below or students can register with JagTag in the Office for Student Involvement, CE Third Floor.  Sponsorship opportunities are available for campus community organizations interested in underwriting the event and being listed in our event program. 

Our keynote speaker will be LGBT educator and consultant Dr. Kand McQueen, who will speak about reserach related to gender identity. McQueen states, “I was born in rural Indiana in September of 1960.  Very early on I knew that I felt like a boy.  Early experiences led me to reject that truth.  After decades of denial, I eventually grew to identify as a transgendered person. As part of my process of acceptance, I entered graduate school at the age of 41 with the goal of exploring the two-and-only-two-sex/two-gender paradigm currently assumed by Western thought from an academic perspective.”

This seminar comprehensively addresses both conceptual and practical aspects that are associated with the grant writing process, often called "grantsmanship."This program is appropriate for faculty members who are contemplating a competitive application to federal or state agencies and foundations in either basic science or clinical research.

Emphasis is given to such things as idea development, identification of the most appropriate granting agency, how to write for reviewers, and tips and strategies that are of proven value in presenting an applicant's case to reviewers.

It is stressed that applicants are writing for two different audiences – the assigned reviewers, who have read the application in its entirety, and non-assigned reviewers who may have read little, or nothing, of the proposal before the meeting of the review panel. Strategies designed to merit a fundable priority score are emphasized.

Presented by:

John Robertson, Ph.D. is an associate with Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops, LLC.  He has been the recipient of competitive extramural funding from both the NIH and non-federal sources. He is the author of 27 peer-reviewed journal articles and three book chapters. Dr. Robertson has been a member of grant review panels, a reviewer for a number of biomedical journals, and served on editorial boards.

Most academic physicians were trained to become physicians and develop expertise in their fields, but were never actually taught to teach. As a result, most of us have learned how to teach through imitation, observation, intuition and trial-and-error. Each of us has a repertoire of teaching approaches and methods that we believe are effective.

Research on teaching and learning provides valuable information pertaining to what teaching techniques actually work well. In this session, Dr. Zakrajsek will present a variety of evidence-based principles that can help improve teaching effectiveness, including surprising evidence that some of our cherished perceptions of facilitating learning are false and, if not harmful, are at the very least counterproductive.

 

About the Presenter:

Todd Zakrajsek, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine and the immediate past Executive Director of the Center for Faculty Excellence at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to his work at UNC, he was the Inaugural Director of the Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching at Central Michigan University and the founding Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Southern Oregon University, where he also taught in the psychology department as a tenured associate professor.

Dr. Zakrajsek received his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Ohio University. He has published and presented widely on the topic of student learning, including workshops and conference keynote addresses in 38 states and 6 countries.

Workshop III. Not All Concepts are Created Equal: Identifying Fundamental and Powerful Concepts and their Corresponding Vocabulary

This is the third of three workshops designed to encourage and support faculty as they experiment with activities and assignments that teach students to think critically about the content of a course using discipline-specific logic. The workshops are based on Gerald Nosich’s approach as described in his book Learning to Think Things Through (4th Ed., Pearson, 2012), which uses the Paul-Elder model of critical thinking as a foundation. Many faculty at IUPUI have attended Dr. Nosich’s workshops (sponsored by the Gateway to Graduation program), and have begun to incorporate the model in their courses. Others who are unfamiliar with this approach can access it via an interactive learning tool. Familiarity with Dr. Nosich’s book would prepare workshop participants to get the most out of this series. All are welcome. Bring course materials, e.g., syllabus and a few course assignments/activities.

This presentation will introduce participants to Hope Theory (Snyder, 2000), a psychological model of human behavior organized around the pursuit of goals. Research on hopeful thinking and goal pursuits will be reviewed from different contexts, including graduate education and healthcare.

Strategies for optimizing hopeful thinking, based on theory and empirical evidence, will be discussed. In addition, goal clarification exercises will help participants better understand their own goals and learn to foster hopeful, goal-directed thinking in mentees, students, and patients.

About the Presenters:

Allison Martin, JD, is a Clinical Professor of Law at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.  She has taught extensively in the area of legal writing and moot court advocacy. Dr. Martin is the faculty advisor for the national and international moot court teams. She also teaches professional responsibility.

Kevin Rand, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychology in the Purdue University School of Science at IUPUI.  Dr. Rand's research interests lie at the intersection of social, personality, and clinical psychology, with a specific interest in the relationships among anxiety, depression, and efforts at coping with life stressors. He is interested in the self-regulating influences of hopeful and optimistic thinking within the context of a life-threatening illness.

Hicks, MD, MPH, is a lecturer in health care policy and an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and an attending hospitalist physician in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In addition, Dr. Hicks is co-Director of the Health Disparities Research and research faculty to the Community Health Innovation and Research (CHIRP) Programs for the Harvard Catalyst. His research has been related to three areas: (1) The effects of patients’ racial and cultural background on the treatment and clinical outcomes of chronic disease; (2) the development and assessment of interventions aimed at improving quality of medical care and the reduction of disparities in care; and (3) community-based participatory research to identify and address healthcare disparities.

Eric Alejandro Sweet-Cordero, M.D., is assistant professor of pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. Sweet-Cordero earned bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and biology from Stanford University in 1989, and his medical doctorate in 1995 from the University of California, San Francisco. He conducted a pediatric residency at UCSF; was a clinical fellow in pediatric hematology/oncology at Children’s Hospital Boston/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Harvard Medical School; and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Cancer Research at MIT, under Tyler Jacks, Ph.D.

Sweet-Cordero’s laboratory identifies novel therapeutic approaches for cancer that target the altered signaling networks that are specific to cancer cells. He leverages genetically engineered mouse models of cancer as well as human cell lines and the analysis of primary human tissue samples to dissect the response to therapeutic agents. His research is focused on identifying and characterizing “synthetic lethal” interactions that alter the outcome of oncogenic Kras activation.

Educational innovations include the SELECT (Scholarly Excellence, Leadership Experiences, Collaborative Training) MD program, developed in partnership with the Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, PA.

Dr. Monroe is recognized for her innovations in physician-patient communication, cross-cultural communication, and mentoring students and faculty. She is a member and past president of the Association for the Behavioral Sciences and Medical Education, a national organization of medical educators dedicated to creatively and innovatively applying social and behavioral science knowledge to medical education. She served on the Association for American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Behavioral and Social Sciences Expert Panel and was a contributor to the Behavioral and Social Sciences Foundations for Future Physicians.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Alicia Monroe is the Vice Dean for Educational Affairs at the University of South Florida College of Medicine (USF COM). She joined the USF faculty as a professor of family medicine in July 2008. Prior to her move to Tampa, FL, Monroe was at Brown University where she served as Associate Dean for Diversity at Brown's Warren Alpert Medical School. Monroe is an expert in creating educational programs and courses to support the professional development of students, residents and junior faculty. She has taught physician-patient communication and counseling skills to medical students and residents for more than 20 years.

Monroe earned her MD from Indiana University School of Medicine, and completed an internship in psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC, and a residency in family medicine at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She recently completed the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program (ELAM), as well as the Macy Mentorship Program in Health Communication.

Jesse Russell has over 30 years experience in advanced wireless communications.  He is the recognized father of digital cellular technology and is responsible for many of the innovations found in the world’s wireless infrastructure. 

Mr. Russell is the former Chief Wireless Architect for AT&T Bell Laboratories and also served as CTO for Lucent Wireless.  He holds over 75 patents in digital cellular technologies, dual-mode digital cellular phones and digital software radio.  2 of 3 FCC 30 Top Minds' Ideas were Jesse's in 2012.  

Mr. Russell was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 1995 for his pioneering work in digital cellular communications technology.

He is a graduate of Tennessee State University and also holds an MSEE from Stanford University.

He is also a senior consultant with The Equity Consulting Group of California, and Elsie Y. Cross and Associates out of Philadelphia. Dr. Washington has served as an educator and administrator in higher education for over 20 years.

He most recently served as the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). He has been an instructor in Sociology, American Studies and Education, and an Assistant Professor of Women’s Studies at UMBC. 

Dr. Washington earned his B.S. degree in Therapeutic Recreation and Music from Slippery Rock State College, and a double Masters’ of Science degree from Indiana University/Bloomington in Higher Education Administration and Counseling, with a concentration in Human Sexuality. He holds a Ph.D. in College Student Development, with a concentration in Multicultural Education from the University of Maryland College Park.

Anne's eperience over the last 30 years includes coordinating instruction and the creation of new courses, developing outreach projects and expanding eduicational roles for academic librarians, and providing professional development on pedagogy, assessment, and curricular integration of information literacy.

She has been a faculty memeber for the Institute of Information Literacy for the Association of College and Research Libraries since 1999, where Anne's work with librarians and library administrators have helped to shape information literacy, instruction, and asseessment projects and intiatives in institutions around the country.

Sharing a physician’s perspective is a leader in neonatal medicine, Niceta Bradburn, MD, FAAP, Program Director and Executive Director of the Regional Neonatology Program for St. Vincent Women's Hospital. Dr. Bradburn has been instrumental in the design of the NICU at St Vincent's and is on the steering committee for Ascension Health. Reflection is a critical part of learning to become a researcher, physician, and educator. Yet, it can be difficult to help learners devote time to this important practice during busy rounds or in a lab. 

In this informal breakfast, Dr. Stephen Brookfield will lead a conversation on how to incorporate reflective practice and critical thinking methods into every teaching situation.

Prior to the event, all attendees are asked to skim the first chapter of Dr. Brookfield's book, Teaching for Critical Thinking.

Stephen D. Brookfield is Distinguished University Professor at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Since beginning his teaching career in 1970, Dr. Brookfield has worked in England, Canada, Australia, and the United States, teaching in a variety of college settings. He has written fifteen books on adult learning, teaching, critical thinking, discussion methods and critical theory, six of which have won the Cyril O. Houle World Award for Literature in Adult Education (in 1986, 1989, 1996, 2005, 2011 and 2012), including The Skillful Teacher and Teaching for Critical Thinking.

The Richard L. Roudebush Psychiatry Service will be presenting a roundtable discussion on the role of Veteran Culture in Modern Mental Health Care.  

Discussion will include the impact of military deployment and reintegration on our local community and family units, the effects of media and stigma on perceptions of veterans, and clinical issues that arise during veteran-oriented care.  A multidisciplinary panel has been selected to present and a brief Q&A will follow the grand rounds.

This interactive session will address the physiological effects of stress and teach methods to increase skills in coping and resilience though evidence-based Integrative Medicine principles. 

About the Presenter:

Larry Bergstrom, MD is Director of the program in Complementary and Integrative Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was born in central Minnesota, received an undergraduate degree from St Cloud State University, and his MD from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine.

Dr. Bergstrom completed an Internal Medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN and joined the Mayo Clinic staff in 1987. He received a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatrics and completed the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona with the help of a Bravewell scholarship. Dr. Bergstrom moved to the Mayo Clinic Division of Consultative Medicine in June 2006 to start and develop an Integrative Medicine Clinic and Program. 

His special interest is to provide integrative medical consultations for patients with medical issues not well served by conventional medicine. He has spoken extensively on incorporating Integrative Medicine principles into Conventional Medical systems.

This session will focus on developing faculty skills in teaching learners about effective communication and assessment when caring for adolescents and young adults in clinical settings.  We will discuss methods to teach medical students and residents brief interventions that address health-risk behaviors and promot behavior change and adherence to treatment.  Important health-risk behaviors in this population and developmentally appropriate risk assessment methods will be reviewed.  We will use interactive role plays and discussion to develop efficient ways for clinical educatiors to teach health-risk assessment skils to medical student and resident within a briedf clinical encounter.  We will also discuss methods to asses these skills and provide brief tools to support assessment. 

Objectives:

  1. Discuss methods to teach learners an enhanced communication style to establish rapport and engage adolescents and young adults in the clinical setting.
  2. Practice techniques to teach learners effective assesment of health-risk behaviors in adolescents and young adults.
  3. Enhance faculty skills in teaching learners brief clinical interventions to address health-risk behaviors and promote behavior change in adlescents and young adults.
  4. Practice methods for evaluating learners' communication and risk-assessment skills and their ability to implement brief interventions for health-risk behaviors with adolescents and young adults.

 

About the Presenters:

Dr. Jason Woodward is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and Pediatrics and Research Director at the Center for Youth and Adults with Conditions of Childhood (CYACC) at IU Health Riley Hospital. He completed his medical degree and residency training at the Indiana University School of Medicine, as well as a fellowship in Pediatric Health Services Research. Dr. Woodward has worked in Kenya through the IU-Moi medical partnership and as a primary care physician at Pecar community health center. As a member of the Section of Developmental Pediatrics, he currently cares for children and adults with special health care needs in the inpatient and outpatient setting. His research interests include improving outcomes for adolescents and young adults with chronic conditions and disabilities as they transition from  pediatric to adult health care.  He is currently the Dexter Fellow within the Department of Medicine and the Co-Medical Director of Camp Riley.

 

Dr. Matthew Aalsma is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Psychology. Trained as a pediatric psychologist, Dr. Aalsma focuses on research with vulnerable populations, including youth in the mental health and juvenile justice systems. His current research agenda includes exploring system-wide and individual efforts to improve the utilization of mental and physical health care for children and adolescents. He has been involved in research and public efforts to improve the health of children, adolescents and adults through public health care collaboration and transformation in the public sector, including criminal justice, mental health, and public policy.

This seminar comprehensively addresses both conceptual and practical aspects that are associated with the grant writing process, often called 'grantsmanship.'This program is appropriate for faculty members who are contemplating a competitive application to federal or state agencies and foundations in either basic science or clinical research.

Emphasis is given to such things as idea development, identification of the most appropriate granting agency, how to write for reviewers, and tips and strategies that are of proven value in presenting an applicant's case to reviewers.

It is stressed that applicants are writing for two different audiences – the assigned reviewers, who have read the application in its entirety, and non-assigned reviewers who may have read little, or nothing, of the proposal before the meeting of the review panel. Strategies designed to merit a fundable priority score are emphasized.

This event is an opportunity for new faculty to learn about what it takes to thrive at IUPUI from campus leaders. This afternoon gathering will provide new faculty with an opportunity to learn about the history of the campus, the nature of academic work at IUPUI and the resources in place to help ensure success.  In addition, participants will be able to explore topics of interest in teaching, research and service.
