Location: Fairbanks Hall (FS),1110
ATS Tract:

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness and understanding of the pay gap that exists between men and women training and working as physicians, scientists, and faculty. This networking event brings residents, students, scientists, and fellows from throughout the Indianapolis area together with industry professionals and established physicians and faculty to discuss pay discrepancies, negotiation skills and to encourage female leadership in medicine and science.

This year’s keynote business speaker is Lori A. Ball, MBA. Ms. Ball plays a strategic role in the overall management and growth of BioStorage Technologies, Inc., a comprehensive sample management solutions company for the bioscience industry.  Through her leadership as Chief Operating Officer she has enabled the company to achieve year-over-year double-digit revenue growth. Her business savvy, leadership experience, and negotiating skills will inspire you and provide unique insight into marketing yourself and your leadership skills.

Sharing a physician’s perspective is a leader in neonatal medicine, Niceta Bradburn, MD, FAAP, Program Director and Executive Director of the Regional Neonatology Program for St. Vincent Women's Hospital. Dr. Bradburn has been instrumental in the design of the NICU at St Vincent's and is on the steering committee for Ascension Health. She is the co-chair of the Executive Peer Review committee and chairs the patient safety committee and clinical risk management.

Negotiating the Divide is held annually close to “Equal Pay Day,” established in 1996 by the National Committee on Pay Equity to symbolize how far into 2013 women must work to earn what men earned in 2012. This it is April 19.

Food and drink will be served and the event and parking are free. Negotiating the Divide is sponsored by the IU National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, along with the American Medical Women’s Association, Indiana State Medical Association, The American Medical Association, and the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Write Winning Grant Proposals

Presenter :Dr. John Robertson
Location: Van Nuys Medical Science Building (MS),326
ATS Tract:

This seminar comprehensively addresses both conceptual and practical aspects that are associated with the grant writing process, often called 'grantsmanship.'This program is appropriate for faculty members who are contemplating a competitive application to federal or state agencies and foundations in either basic science or clinical research.

Emphasis is given to such things as idea development, identification of the most appropriate granting agency, how to write for reviewers, and tips and strategies that are of proven value in presenting an applicant's case to reviewers.

It is stressed that applicants are writing for two different audiences – the assigned reviewers, who have read the application in its entirety, and non-assigned reviewers who may have read little, or nothing, of the proposal before the meeting of the review panel. Strategies designed to merit a fundable priority score are emphasized.

All participants will receive light breakfast, boxed lunch, and a copy of The Grant Application Writer’s Workbook.  This event is free and open to all IUSM and IUPUI faculty and learners.

Note: Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

About the Presenter:

John Robertson, Ph.D. is an associate with Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops, LLC.  He has been the recipient of competitive extramural funding from both the NIH and non-federal sources. He is the author of 27 peer-reviewed journal articles and three book chapters. Dr. Robertson has been a member of grant review panels, a reviewer for a number of biomedical journals, and served on editorial boards.

7 Sane & Sensible Email Practices

Presenter :Meggin McIntosh, PhD
Location: Other/ Off Campus,
ATS Tract:

Many faculty find that they – and those around them – are often controlled by email instead of exerting control over it. Email is one of the tools to use for building and sustaining project momentum, and it can also distract and detract from the optimum trajectory of your work.

Participants will learn:

  • Ways to decrease the amount of time they spend on email by at least 50%.
  • How to increase the clarity of communication, thereby amplifying productivity.
  • Habits to break – that are currently costing faculty time and productivity.
  • Seven sane and sensible practices to integrate into their routines.

Attendees will leave with a renewed sense of control over their email and other electronic communications.

Come join us for a teleseminar over the lunch hour from 12:00 - 1:00.  OFAPD will send a workbook to each participant prior to the session. A follow-up seminar will be available for download after the session.

About the Presenter:
